This program is dedicated to nurturing emerging composers in Western Sydney, focussing on those from the Penrith Local Government Area. This program provides a unique opportunity for young composers aged 18–35 to refine their craft, engage with professional industry mentors, and see their compositions performed by talented young musicians.
Through collaboration with advanced students from Penrith Con’s Ensemble Programs, participants will receive valuable feedback, allowing them to hone their skills in a supportive, creative, and collaborative environment. Whether you’re looking to explore new musical ideas or develop your compositional style, this program offers a platform to advance your career while contributing to the local arts community.

This program is designed to support the artistic growth of emerging composers and to provide them with the opportunity to make lasting connections within the professional music community.
Commission Details
Composers will be commissioned to create an original piece, approximately 10 to 15 minutes in length, featuring the following instrumentation:
Flute, 2 Violins, Viola, Cello, and Piano. Alternative instrumentation may be discussed with the Artistic Director.
Composers will receive a $3,000 fee
Penrith Con is committed to nurturing local talent, and through the Young Composers Program, we aim to create pathways for emerging composers to further their careers while contributing to the vibrant local arts scene.
How to apply
To apply, submit your portfolio to the email below. Your portfolio should include:
- A minimum of two original compositions (scores of 80–200 bars, with optional audio recordings)
- A full resume
- A list of prior compositions or arrangements, including instrumentation
