Established in 2021, Richard Bonynge Ensemble was founded with the goal of enriching the community through the transformative power of music.

The ensemble performs a wide variety of repertoire, from beloved masterpieces to long-forgotten works deserving revival, as well as new compositions by emerging local composers. By embracing both tradition and innovation, the ensemble creates dynamic performances that resonate with diverse audiences.

At the heart of Richard Bonynge Ensemble is the fusion of seasoned musicians’ expertise with the vibrant energy and fresh perspectives of young instrumentalists. This collaboration cultivates a distinctive style and unique culture, all while nurturing the next generation of classical musicians and inspiring a deeper appreciation for the art form.

Comprising some of the finest young musical talents in Penrith, the ensemble provides early-career musicians with valuable opportunities to work alongside industry professionals. Through workshops, masterclasses, and mentoring sessions, they are given the chance to hone their craft and develop their performance skills. The ensemble also fosters collaboration with established chamber groups, offering a platform for young musicians to explore diverse repertoires, refine their technique, and grow as artists.

Dedicated to community engagement, Richard Bonynge Ensemble also aims to inspire audiences of all ages with its passionate performances, promoting a greater connection to music.

About Richard Bonynge AC, CBE

Renowned Australian conductor and pianist Richard Bonynge is celebrated for his outstanding contributions to the world of opera and classical music.

A distinguished figure in the international music community, Bonynge’s career spans over five decades, and he is particularly known for his long-standing professional and personal partnership with the legendary soprano Dame Joan Sutherland.

Bonynge conducted nearly all of Joan Sutherland’s operatic performances from 1962 until her retirement in 1990, helping shape some of opera’s most iconic moments. His leadership in opera houses worldwide has cemented his legacy as a leading conductor.

He has received numerous prestigious honours, including the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1977, and Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1989. In 2009, he received the Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Award, and in 2012, he was made Companion in the Order of Australia (AC).

Bonynge is also dedicated to mentoring young talent and continues to inspire future generations of musicians.
